WHAT IS WABI - SABI?

Wabi - Sabi is sometimes described as the beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.” Its’ characteristics include asymmetry, roughness, simple beauty, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy and the appreciation of both natural objects and the forces of nature. Simply, we want to help others to develop a Wabi-Sabi mindset, which is accepting things as they are, knowing that even imperfect things are perfect in their own way.

Wabi Sabi (詫寂), the aesthetics of the inevitable, its essence is transcending change wherein impermanence is the only constant.  The ending of something, our own mortality, the cycle of life and death… what does it really mean when something comes to an end? Perhaps a new beginning that is transformative and in abandoning the “me” we change now, not when it is too late. Wabi Sabi is the mirror that shows us.

Mono No Aware (モノの哀れ), the empathy of things is the very fabric of Wabi Sabi. It is that state of purposeless mindfulness and clarity of what has passed down to us from the past, to live with it, cherish and honor it in the now, which is the future. Mono No Aware is of things as they truly are, but beyond that transcends them into our dreams and imagination. Touching all our senses, Mono No Aware is the experience of matter and meaning in the most profound of ways.

The collective of cone9colab artists share in the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi and our colab offering unique and customized programming which is intended to illuminate the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic through our collective art works and events, which include many interactive workshop elements for our guests to enjoy with us. Each workshop is customized for the occasion and the location and many are done outdoors. We often invite special guest artists for certain events who can add to our expression of the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic. Workshop elements can include any of he following.
